The Safety Plan Topic: Trenching and Shoring

Training on Trenching and Shoring is required when contractors work in trenches or excavations at the depth of 5 feet or greater. Contractors need to understand the regulations and responsibilities to avert the serious consequences of accidents from soil collapse. Serious injuries or death may result.

In such cases, owners and contractors have found themselves in court dealing with huge lawsuits, heavily fined by OSHA, or even facing manslaughter charges. Aside from this, trench collapses tend to make the news. That makes these incidents public events, which can follow a company for years, and affect future earning potential.

The recent trench fatality in Studio City is an excellent example of what can happen - 65 fire and rescue personnel on the scene with cameras from all local television networks descending upon a job site where a worker died in an 8 foot excavation. Full Cal/OSHA investigation and review by the local District Attorney.
